I was born and reared in Detroit. As a boy and a young man I spent many days playing and fishing along the river on Jefferson and on Belle isle. I used to live for a few years after I was out of the Navy at the mobile home park at the foot of Altar road. It was a pleasure for me to sit back the other afternoon and visit my boyhood haunts. I can sit and just watch the water flow by and day dream of a youth now past and relax and enjoy with a smile. In other words I like the web cam very much.

What a great interview, thank you sir. As a child, I grew up in Sandusky, Ohio. At night, my dad and I fished for catfish at the Sandusky coal docks. As we fished we would watch the big ships being loaded with coal right in front of us, with the work lights on, it was beautiful. That is a great memory. I was only a child when the Fitz was lost, but to this day I have very strong feelings for her and her crew. Can anyone tell me if the Fitz ever hauled coal? In particular, from the Sandusky Coal Docks. I would like to find out by date from her ships log. I would like to have a painting made of the above memory and present it to my dad. Any help would be very appreciated. Thank you and God Bless, Tim Giles gilestp adelphia.net

Loved the photos of the launch. I was there as member of Boy Scout troop AP10. The yard man who was our escort was colorful and told us somethings prior to the launch, which happened. He said they were bad omens, such as the bottle having to broke with a hammer to start the launch, the automatic rope shears having to be assisted by ax, splash wake drowning the review stand. Being an impressionable 11 year old they affected us at the time. As a result I would watch for the Fritz when my Dad and I were walleye fishing every time I saw here I figured good thing that guy was full of whole. Then when I heard of the loss all those memories be came quit clear. Being good Boy Scouts we were there as soon as we could get in them yard that day. So this old guy who was a carpenter by trade showed us all the works. He was kind of sad because he had heard this would the last launch at that slip. I don't know if that was true or not but because of it he gave us an excellent tour of the yard and told us how the ropes and timbers the ship was built on functioned as not to harm the ship, just the wood! "he yelled" it was splintered as you can see by the debris in the slip after the launch. Great web sight! Do you have any close ups of the crowd during the launch? We were right at water edge at first because we were there so early. All the big shots pushed us back at least 50 feeet from the slip at time of launch. We got wet feet, they got drowned with the splash! powell@sme-usa.com

I'm a transplant from Ashland, Wisc. where I remember the ore boats coming in and loading up as a kid also my father (whom is now deceased) was a wheelsman on many a boat on the Great Lakes. I've been told he did work on the Fitz when it was first commissioned. Would love to find out if it is true or not. Also would like to find out some of the names of boats he may have worked on through his career. I believed he retired in 1977 his name was Fred Husa. I can be reached at pennynort at m33access.com. I miss seeing the boats. I appreciate the work that is done and contributions made to keep this site up. Hope the camera get's repaired soon. I wonder how the weather affects/will affect it. I know that the weather affected me when I spent time in Port Huron and the Soo back in the 60's serving in the USCG. Ice and wind...what a combination.

I have been going to Belle Isle since I was a little kid, almost 60 years ago. My mom and Dad have been going since the 30's. I visited the Museum a few years ago. My ancestors were sailors on the river freighters. I like to still be able to see some of my childhood memories, even if it's from my own home....Thank you!

I enjoyed visiting the grounds of the Dossin museum Monday, 8.24.2004, and was very impressed by the two mounted cannons from Perry's victory on Lake Erie 1813. However, I was disappointed the limestone bases had suffered decades of exposure to the elements. It would be great if the limestone could be sealed somehow. wjuntunen@sbcglobal.net

Excellent broadcast from the captain of the Ford. I enjoyed it a great deal. I am a former sailor of Great Lakes oar vessels, my most recent duty was aboard the Oglebay Norton Co. MV Earl W. Oglebay. Other ships I have sailed aboard are the Middletown, Columbia Star, and the Armco, also part of the Oglebay Norton Co. Formerly Columbia Transport, who operated the Edmund Fitzgerald at the time of her loss. The subject of the fitz, and her loss is not one that anyone regularly talks about while out on the water, as there are many sailors still on the lakes who lost a friend, or a family member in the wreck that night, but there are many of us who have our questions, and theories. I was a sponsor of the Fred Shannon expedition to the Fitz in 1994, during which many questions were answered, however, the true cause of her loss cannot be answered by anyone alive today. Gordon Lightfoot's ever popular song "THE WRECK OF THE EDMUND FITZGERALD" is a good song, but that is where it stops. There are no words, or verses from that song that can in any way tell the true story of what those men went through that night. All we can do is take every safety measure possible to prevent such a loss again. As a sailor, I spent 8 years on the lakes total, and the boats just dont sail in the kind of weather that took the Fitz anymore. When a storm is coming, the boats can be found in safe anchorage in any given harbor or river or bay. Once, while aboard U.S. Steel's MYRON C. TAYLOR, I spent 4 days at anchor off of Drummond Island, waiting for weather on Lake Michigan to simmer down. Since 1975, The loss of the Fitzgerald and her crew have served as an eye opener for Great lakes Captains, and the general idea is that no load is more important than human life, so we just dont do it. I was born and raised in Port Huron..but now live in Missouri and I miss the Great lakes and the rivers so very much! My favorite ship is the Paul Tregurtha. I spend some of my vacation time in a cottage in Algonac and when the freighters pass I stop whatever I am doing and watch in awe. Thanks for such an interesting site. Thanks to your web site, I check the cam and passage schedules way out here in Virginia and watch when a boat is passing. Keep up the good work...a suggestion: leave a passage schedule posted rather than as part of the slide show so we long-distance fans can pop in and see what's coming! Thanks!

The webcam is great. It really gives you the opportunity to view the passing ships at your leisure, and enjoy the all visuals that accompany. I especially liked the "Goose" cam preset that let everyone see the birth of a new family. Keep up the good work!!!

Give control to the right hand side of the screen, so viewers can see scheduled traffic, rather than the timed rotation of the various subjects. The camera view and the schedule work together for a better idea of what is going on in this stretch of the river. Jon F.

Hi, My home town is Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and I can remember as a small boy the "South & North American" coming into port and making port for the day while the passengers got off the ships and enjoyed Door County Wisconsin for the day. I would love to get the "Georgian Bay Line Promotional Video" or any other memorabilia highlighting these two wonderful ships. Can you please tell me how I can purchase items relating to this wonderful piece of maritime history that meant so much to me. Thank you. E.G. Paul

Outstanding story! Great pictorials and film clips too. What a positive adventure for children of all ages. I grew up in the crossroads of America and cherish those memories of "The Long Ships." From Lake Superior, and points North, these behemoths roamed silently carrying the life blood of a continent. I am touched greatly by this history lesson.

What a nice site. Lived in Ferndale for many years before joining the Coast Guard. Was stationed on Belle Isle when the B H Becker and the M/V Montrose collided. I was the duty boat coxwain that warm July night and was one of the first boats on scene. With the help of the RCMP, Detroit Harbormaster and the mail boat Wescott all hands were rescued. Any one that can furnish any information or photos of the incident would help me put my 31 plus years in the Coast Guard together for a writing. Thanks and keep up the good work. My brother and I enjoys this site very much. Our father had a great love of the lakes up there. He served many eyars on the Coast guard in Ohio. He passed away Jan 1998, it is comforting and brings back alot of memories when we used to go to Michigan on summer vacations with our parents and watch the big ships he so much loved!!

I about passed out when I found the movie on the ALVIN CLARK on here. My wife and I stayed with Frank for a week and worked and helped him there in Menominee. I have many pictures of us with Frank and his ship and the place up there. We stayed in the apartment in the back of the gift shop. Frank told us that there were two films on this subject. I had seen on the films on out PBS (ch 56) several years ago. We have made two trips up there to see this ship. Frank was very gracious, warm. It makes me mad and sick to think of what all has happened to Frank and to the final demise of the ALVIN CLARK. Frank is gone now and so is the ALVIN CLARK. What ever has happened to the place up there other than being made into a parking lot ? MIKEEE and HAzel

Been to the Dossin Many times, I love the place. The job you do preserving the history of rapidly diminishing part of our culture is second to none. My family heritage is steeped with the boats and the Detroit river, they have work on a lot of them. Being able to check in on "My" river is a great asset. Your cam is first rate. It is superior to the Panama Canal camera. Thought the sound was great too. I love the sound of the wind as it whips through the mast and flaps the flags. My donation will be sent shortly. Thanks for a great Museum!

The only thing better than the webcam is seeing visitors sign in who have a history with the museum, shipping on the lakes, and the Ford Fleet...I noticed Capt. Eric, Capt. Jim Van Buskirk, his daughter, and Jack (son of Jack) Callahan, all of whom I knew in my 11 years (from deckhand to 2nd Mate) on the Ford Boats. Also saw Elmer from the Clay, who probably knew my brother, Charley. The evening the Fitzgerald went down I was aboard the CGC Westwind about 100 miles offshore of Cape Cod Mass. I was a QM3 at the time. I was in the chart room working the ADF (AM Automatic Direction Finder) looking for a radio station from which to obtain a fix. I picked up the distress transmission for the laker following the Fitzgerald who was indicating the vessel had disappeared form the the radar. After notifying Captain Morrill on the WestWind a call was placed to district hq at Governors Island where we learned that the call I picked up originated from Lake Superior and that the Coast Guard had already activated. davidboatman@peoplepc.com

Spent 18 years with the Ford Marine Department and all that time, except for a month or two here and there on the Benson, Breech and Henry was on the William Clay Ford with my good friend and mentor Captain Erickson. Prior to that I worked 16 years for the Wilson Marine Transit Company "The Family Fleet" On November 10,1975 I was on watch when the news about the Fitzgerald started to break. I stayed in the Pilot House all night with Captain Erickson until he decided to head for Duluth. By that time it was past time to go back on watch. Piloting came easy to me but all of my ship handling ability was taught to me by Capt Erickson, to whom I am very indebted and grateful. Everything had to be exact and that was right up my alley....no B.S. in the Pilot House. I swear we went in and out of the Rouge River in exactly the same track, varying no more than inches for 18 years. Hope to get back to Belle Isle someday....nice Website, keep up the good work

Thirty years ago as a student at MNU I used to spend spare time at the Marquette ore docks watching the boats arrive, load and depart. It's sad that a lot of those ladies of the lakes have been retired, but what a terrific idea it was to spare a pilot house and to mount a camera. It's fun to watch the new generation of boats.

I very much enjoyed viewing your interview with Captain Erickson regarding the sinking of the Fitzgerald. His uniform showing his ribbons led me to believe her served on active duty with the USN where he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Navy Commendation Medal, WW II Victory medal, USN Good Conduct Medal. His bottom row of ribbons were confusing in that the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign with two bronze stars would be worn just below the Good Conduct award, and the Navy Occupation award is mounted upside down - the white black should be to the viewers left not right. Question: I have researched the ribbon in the center of his bottom row and am unable to identify it - perhaps you could help. Keep up the good work - would love to have been there in person. I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, 28 miles from Lake Michigan. I had relatives in Saugatuck, West Olive, Charlevoix and Petoskey. All had boats and were interested in great lakes shipping history. I was on the "Beaver Islander," in a terrible storm, on that wicked day that the "Edmund Fitzgerald" went down. All aboard the car ferry to St. James thought that they, me included, were doomed to death by drowning. I'll never forget it.

I sailed aboard the William Clay Ford in the late 1970's and to see her pilothouse historically preserved is quite an honor. Due to disability, I may not get the chance to come down from the Upper Peninsula to visit the museum, but to access your fine website online is just as rewarding. The webcam from the mast of the Clay's pilothouse, showing the vessel traffic on the Detroit River is the best! It sure would be nice to get in touch with old friends from the Clay again.

My four children and I visited Dossin/GLMI on Saturday, November 1st. We had a great time and learned much about the Great Lakes and its rich maritime history. We purchased a Edmund Fitzgerald Pewabic tile and a few books. We also contributed to the webcam. We can't wait to visit again. What a fascinating place!

Hello Friends, My name is Tim, I live in Detroit Michigan. I seriously have to say that Dossin is worth living for, I love coming to the museum regularly and looking at the model ore barges. I have loved watching barges since I was a little kid with my father. My father worked for Lonyo Brick Co, and it just happens, I live near there and collect Lonyo bricks. Pretty odd huh? Well if you have any historic bricks send them my way! Also my father's brother was a Captain on the rail ferries to Windsor. Rob Smedley was his name.... oh the memories. Anyways...I think Dossin should have a restaurant or serve some kind of food. All the museum watching makes me very hungry...perhaps a Great Lakes potato-pancake breakfast. Ill volunteer! Take Care Timothy TSmedaly3@comcast.net

With this site, I have your list of expected traffic and I love it. Just wish there were as many ships as there were in the 1960's.

Any time I want, I can once again look out onto tne river and watch those huge vessels lumber up and down the river. Very relaxing. And think of the ton of money I am saving, doing so. Very interested in river traffic. I think this web site is great. I live on the south channel and always look forward to watching the ships going by. I do miss the large cruise ships, such as, the North America and South America. They were a sight to see at night with all their lights aglow. I have an Uncle that used to work on the freighters. I worked with a man (Paul Murry) that used to spend his summers, as a child, on the Great Lakes as his father was a Captain.

Looking forward to using the camera. Have not done so, yet. In 1946-1948 I would view Canada and the ships on the river from the top most men's room in the Book Bldg. I worked there at the time. Because family members worked on "the boats" and the joy I got from watching them in the locks and on the rivers and lakes, I joined the Marine Historical Society a few years later, Navy duty in between. Thank you for installing this service.

This is an awesome webcam!!! I can't believe that I'll be able to watch the boats go by on a daily basis, usually I have to wait until the first week of September when we visit Copper Harbor every year to watch boats. Thank you so very much, you made my entire day!!!!!

Great cam! Little frustrating when boats are passing but the person controlling the cam does not seem to focus on the boat! Wish it was automatic!

Honorary Michigander via Mom's family in Ludington and Chelsea and my years at MSU. Falling in love with the lakes all over again lately, and especially the big boat traffic. Your cam and supporting info on your site is a great asset in learning about these great boats. I can't believe how many of these boats have such interesting histories, even WWII action! Amazing. Great job. Will you be adding other additional cams?

My bride grew up on the St. Mary's River below the Soo and took me up there last fall. Fell in love with the freighters and the lakes. She has always told me about the lakes, and my first experience was absolutely fantastic. Thanks so much for this site and all the work it takes to keep it running.

I have been an Institute member since 1954 and was a volunteer on the museum ship J.T. Wing when Captain Johnston was Curator with his ships cat Winkey. Also served at Editor of Telescope Magazine for a couple of years about 1960, and spent 18 years as a member of the Institute board. The Institute has served as a friends group for the Dossin Museum well. The City of Detroit and its residents sould be proud that they have one of the finest Maritime Museums on the Great Lakes due to the hard work or its present Curator. Looking forward to seeing the new Web Cam in operation.

Once upon a time Wallaceurg was the furthest inland great lakes port. shipping vehicles and good for the war. ( International truck) was just 13 miles away we also cleaned out the rum boats in the bulk carriers and that often led to some good parties, our last deep water vessel was a small grain vessel loading up in Sydenham river through the Channal 'Ecarte. owned and operated by the new york news. We Ply the great Lakes on our own 36 ft boat. Good page and site here . have visited most of the ports you mention either by car or boat. Thanks .Your a Road-map to the World.

Several years ago my family and I drove down to the museum and viewed a British cannon which fell into the Detroit River during the 1813 evacuation. It was a great opportunity to view the entire museum, much to our enjoyment. What a great place to appreciate the history of the Great Lakes!

Keep up the great work.

Comments: Nice Site and glad to see it includes those whose love of the history of the Great Lakes is equaled with the love for the preservation of the Lakes.

As a Licensed Deck Officer living on the Lakes, it's a general observation that we need to start some type of "bridge" between the hundreds of groups, whose love of the Lakes in some form or another, can band energies together for the common cause of Lakes preservation. Thanks to Barb and her husband for the work done regarding DDT spraying. Interesting reading.

I just finished my current project and would like to focus on a great lakes vessel for my next one. My basement is beginning to look like a museum but it's very rewarding and very satisfying. I plan on visiting the museum very soon, thank for a nice web site.
